Although dance in Munich has a tradition of more than 350 years, it was only with the emancipation of ballet from opera, which Konstanze Vernon achieved in 1988 with the support of the Bavarian Free State, that the BAVARIAN STATE BALLET was able to develop into one of the most distinguished ensembles on the international dance scene.
In 1998, Ivan Liška took over the direction of the company. In August 2016, Igor Zelensky succeeded him and guided the company's fortune until April 2022. Laurent Hilaire has now been the artistic director of the BAVARIAN STATE BALLET since May 2022. In addition to cultivating Munich's extraordinarily rich repertoire from Romanticism - Giselle and La Sylphide - to Classical - Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty - to 20th century classics from John Cranko to Frederick Ashton to John Neumeier, as well as all the definitive full-length ballets of the 20th century, choreographers whose works have not yet been seen in Munich have been engaged: David Dawson, Sharon Eyal, Marco Goecke, Andrey Kaydanovskiy, Wayne McGregor, Liam Scarlett, Christian Spuck and Christopher Wheeldon.

"Artistically, the organizational effort was worth it in every respect. 'Der Schneesturm' is a ballet choreographed with flow and pleasure."

"Against all odds - at the Bavarian State Ballet, brilliant new roles triumph in Peter Wright's corona-adapted 'Giselle'."
